Interpreting for Victim-Survivors of Domestic Violence

06 May 2021, 17:00

Online event

In this presentation, Rebecca Tipton of the University of Manchester will report on recent research that examines interpreting for victim-survivors of domestic violence and abuse in police interviews and in charity sector support organisations. The presentation will explore the problem of vulnerability in police interviews, how different parties to the interaction respond to perceived vulnerability and implications for interpreter decision-making. It will also open up discussions on the challenge interpreters face when working with victim-survivors across multiple service interventions in a short period, and on interpreting in situations where victim-survivors seek to communicate directly in (very limited) English, bypassing the interpreter.
